Helpful answers
Frequently asked.
Most of what people ask before their first visit — collected and answered once, so you know what to expect.
Booking
Reserving your seat.
Do I need to book ahead?
Not strictly, but weekend evenings and special events do sell out. Holding seats online takes about ninety seconds and is free — we don't charge a booking fee.
How far in advance can I book?
Roughly 25 days ahead. As soon as new films open in our schedule, they appear on the Schedule page.
I lost my booking reference — can you find it?
Yes. Use the Manage reservation page if you still have your reference. If you've lost it, email hello@cinema-service.com with your name and the mobile number supplied on your booking — we'll locate it.
Can I change or cancel a reservation?
Of course. Since we don't take payment online there is no refund to process — email hello@cinema-service.com as early as you can and we'll release the seats or move you to another session in the same week if availability allows.
Are there assigned seats?
Sessions marked Open Seat are first-come, first-served within the cinema you book. Most special events have allocated seating; you'll be asked at the box office where you'd like to sit.
Payment
We pay at the door.
Why don't you take online payment?
Browntis Movies is a small independent cinema. Skipping online payment lets us avoid booking-fee surcharges and keeps the foyer staffed for conversations — useful when you want to ask what's on. Seats are reliably held under your name from the moment you reserve.
What forms of payment do you accept?
All major cards (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx — no surcharge) and cash. Cards can be tapped or inserted; we don't accept gift cards from other cinemas.
How do concession, child and senior rates work?
Reserve at the concession rate online; show your student card, NSW Senior Card or NSW Companion Card at the door. Children under 14 always pay the child rate. If you forget your card we can charge the adult rate and credit the difference if you return with proof within a week.
Do you have gift cards?
Yes — see Gift cards for amounts, delivery and how they're redeemed at the box office.
At the cinema
Arriving and the picture.
When should I arrive?
About fifteen minutes before the session. We don't run advertisements before the film, but there will sometimes be a short trailer for an upcoming special event. The published start time is when the feature begins.
What if I'm late?
For revival prints and feature films we'll seat latecomers up to ten minutes in. For Royal Opera and National Theatre Live relays — which are live — we cannot admit late patrons, sorry.
Will there be ads?
No commercial ads. Occasionally a short trailer for an upcoming Browntis programme item or a brief note from the projectionist.
Is the cinema quiet?
Quieter than the multiplex. Phones are expected to be away; we may step in if your screen is lighting the room.
How do you keep things accessible?
See Accessibility below, or our full accessibility statement for specifics on wheelchair routes, captioning and audio description.
Accessibility
A cinema for everyone.
Is the cinema wheelchair-accessible?
Cinema 1 is step-free from Kent Street with dedicated wheelchair spaces and an accessible bathroom in the foyer. Cinema 2 is upstairs via lift; please ring ahead if you need help, the lift is sometimes paused for service in the small hours.
Do you offer captions and audio description?
Yes. Sessions marked CVCC support CaptiView closed-caption devices (ask at the box office) in Cinema 1. Audio description headsets are available on request for most first-run titles; please reserve them ahead so we can confirm a unit is charged for you.
Are there relaxed / sensory-friendly sessions?
We run a relaxed matinee roughly once a month — softer sound, lights up a notch, audience members free to move. Watch the Special events page or sign up to our weekly note.
Companion Card?
Yes — NSW Companion Card holders bring a carer at no extra cost. Reserve one ticket for the cardholder; we'll add the carer at the box office.
Food & drink
The bar and what we serve.
What's on the bar?
A short list — Australian and New Zealand wines by the glass, two beers on tap, single-origin espresso, soft drinks and house-made popcorn. Bar opens sixty minutes before the first session each day.
Can I take a drink into the cinema?
Yes. We use lidded cups for hot drinks; we ask that you keep talking to the bar, not the room.
Can I bring outside food?
Outside food and drink aren't permitted in the cinemas, though we make exceptions for medical and dietary needs — ask at the bar and we'll sort it.
Groups & hires
Bringing a crowd, or hiring the room.
Do you offer group rates?
Groups of ten or more receive 15% off any standard session midweek (Monday — Thursday). See Group bookings to enquire.
Can I hire the cinema for a private screening?
Yes — both rooms are available outside our public schedule. Birthdays, corporate evenings, school groups and registered Australian charities all have a home here. Send a note via Group bookings.
Can my film school screen here?
We run a programme for student short-film screenings and graduate showcases at a subsidised rate — get in touch.
