About

A cinema, built for the picture & the silence between scenes.

Browntis Movies opened on Kent Street as a two-screen independent cinema for the Sydney CBD. We programme carefully, project well, run our bar quietly, and keep the doors open late.

Sydney's festival landscape

Partners on
the local circuit.

Browntis works hand in hand with Sydney's independent cinema culture. We maintain close, ongoing relationships with cornerstone events such as the Sydney Film Festival and the Sydney Short Film Festival, and we programme alongside other NSW showcases through the calendar.

That proximity shapes what lands on our screens — festival premieres carried over into theatrical runs, encore presentations announced after touring seasons, and conversations with filmmakers anchored in programmes audiences already care about. When a title leaves the circuit, Browntis is often where it settles for a proper room, meticulous projection and a crowd that treats local festivals as year-round geography, not a single week on the calendar.

The Rooms

Two screens,
each their own temperament.

Cinema 1 is downstairs — our larger room, wheelchair-accessible, used for premieres, opera relays and Q&A nights. Cinema 2 is upstairs, the smaller of the two, with the more intimate atmosphere we keep for revival prints and weekday matinees.

Cinema 1 — Downstairs

132 seats · 4K projection · 7.1 surround · wheelchair-accessible · CaptiView closed captioning · audio description supported.

Cinema 2 — Upstairs

68 seats · 2K projection · 5.1 surround · suited to subtitled features, foreign films and quieter pictures.

Bar & foyer

Wine, beer and espresso served from 60 minutes before the first session — outside food and drink not permitted.
